£2.6 million mobile phone recycling payout in January

UK mobile users who were strapped for cash in the post-Christmas period finally latched onto the benefits of recycling old phones for cash, according to figures published by SellMyMobile.com this week.
Just over £2.6 million was paid out for old phones in January 2012, with people trying to pay off credit card bills accrued in the run up to the festive period.
Many people were also recycling an old phone after having been given a new handset as a present during Christmas 2011.
Over 41,000 mobiles were recycled, which is almost a third more than during the same period of 2011.
Unsurprisingly, the Apple iPhone 3GS, which is now almost three years old, topped the charts when it comes to most recycled mobile. The average selling price for this handset was £104, making it a good investment with a sustainable value.
The iPhone 4 was in second place, although at £243, this 2010 handset was definitely one of the more valuable phones to recycle.
Four different BlackBerry handsets were also on the list, along with two HTC models and the lone Samsung Galaxy S, worth £127.
Interestingly, the Apple iPhone 3G, which originally hit the market back in 2008, is still selling strongly and fetches about £68 when recycled, according to the study.
Spokesperson, Keir McConomy, said that it was the financial pressures associated with paying for Christmas that had made January such a bumper month for mobile phone recycling.
McConomy pointed out that smartphones were prevalent and helping to push up the resale value of older phones when they go for recycling.
While many people were selling old phones for a bit of extra cash, others will be getting ready to offset their next upgrade by parting ways with their existing mobile.
