6.3 inch Galaxy Note 3 on the horizon

Friday, January 18, 2013 - 10:56:14

Reports from a Korean paper suggest that Samsung is busy working on a follow-up to the Galaxy Note 2 smartphone, which could see the screen size make the leap from 5.5 inches right up to 6.3 inches.

This would push the Galaxy Note 3 dangerously close to the seven inch tablet market and also make it difficult to grasp with just one hand, unless of course Samsung is very clever about the design of the phone.

As well as sporting a bigger screen than ever, the Galaxy Note 3 will apparently use an eight core processor, replacing the quad core chip found on the current generation model.

This new CPU will be the Exynos Octa, which Samsung will build in-house, although the Korea Times also suggests that the manufacturer is looking to sell the chip to its rivals for their own high end devices.

Sources state that Samsung is courting Chinese manufacturers, including Huawei and ZTE, to sell the eight core processor and make some serious cash.

Samsung is also in a precarious position with rival Apple, which might lead to the Californian iPhone producer ending its contract for processors, that could put a dent in Samsung's finances.

The Galaxy Note range has operated almost unchallenged in its own market niche for over a year, but competitors are starting to catch up. In fact, Huawei has its own six inch smartphone on the way, which could put the squeeze on the current Galaxy Note 2.

If the Galaxy Note 3 is as big and powerful as reported, it will definitely make a splash when it eventually launches. Until then, we can look forward to the unveiling of the Galaxy S4, since this will probably be Samsung's biggest seller over the next year.
