Affordable Nokia Handset Goes Charger-free

O2 is partnering with Nokia to expand the reach of its Chargers Out of the Box campaign, with another new device arriving on the UK market without a charger included as standard.
Green Wise reports that the Nokia 301 will be chargerless in the retail version sold by network provider O2, which should help to improve the green credentials of this device. O2 is hoping to make the mandatory inclusion of a charger with every new phone a thing of the past by 2015 and it is whittling down the number of devices which come bundled with this often unnecessary accessory.
Prior to the Nokia 301, other smartphones, including the HTC One and Nokia Lumia 925, have been offered without a charger by O2. This means that the 301 is not the first phone in this new wave, but there is one thing that makes it stand out from its predecessors: unlike the One and Lumia 925, the 301 is not a high end, boutique device, but rather a mass market mobile which is very affordable. This means that it could sell in higher numbers, which means that the lack of a charger will make an even bigger difference to the carbon footprint.
Buyers will of course still need a charger to powerit up, but since most people now have several of these at home, there should be no issues. O2 users who do want a charger can buy one separately and this scheme should stop yet more chargers being added to the estimated stockpile of more than 100 million unused, plug-in chargers in the UK alone. Hundreds of thousands of miles of copper wiring are found within these unwanted chargers and so, like mobile phones, it is worth recycling them if you have any at home.
