Apple Extends Recycling Programme to Rival Handsets

iPhone maker Apple has offered its customers the chance to trade in their old handsets in order to get money off an upgrade for some time now, although until this week it did not offer to recycle handsets built by rival manufacturers. However, the Telegraph reports that Apple’s Reuse and Recycling Programme has now been extended so that anyone with an Android, Windows Phone or BlackBerry handset can also participate, providing their next purchase is intended to be an iPhone or an iPad.
As well as allowing people to recycle their phones online, Apple is encouraging potential customers to come to one of its high street outlets, where they can get their old mobiles valued immediately and then get access to money off their new device.
It has been two years since Apple started allowing UK customers to recycle their old iPhones and it is perhaps surprising that it has taken so long to do the same for people who are looking to switch from a different type of device.
Apple is also keen to increase its green credentials and operate its business in a more environmentally friendly manner. This is something that mobile recycling will help to realise, although Apple faces stiffer competition here than almost anywhere else.
Consumers have the option to compare the prices offered for their old mobile phone online, meaning that if Apple does not plan to give them as much for their unwanted iPhone, there may be a better deal waiting from a rival recycling firm. Getting cash for an old handset means that its residual value can then be reinvested in whatever way the user chooses, whether that means buying a new iPhone or choosing to spend it elsewhere: the amount of choice on offer is impressive.
