Apple exec stokes rumours of miniature iPhone

Apple could be closer than ever to creating a smaller, cheaper version of its iPhone handset, according to an interview with high level executive Tim Cook.
At the moment the iPhone 4 is one of the most expensive models on the market, if only because networks do not subsidise it as heavily as its rivals as consumers are willing to pay a high price for owning this desirable model.
Few people buy the iPhone 4 to use as a pay as you go handset and Mr Cook implied during an interview with Forbes that this currently relegates it to the realm of the wealthy while excluding those on tighter budgets.
The pay as you go market is large and Mr Cook said that it was in the process of tackling its lack of a presence in this area in a clever manner.
Quite what this new approach from Apple might be remains a point of speculation, but industry expert Toni Sacconaghi believes that it must indicate that the firm is working on a cheaper version of the iPhone which will have the price and features to appeal to a wider audience.
Many people have claimed that a miniature iPhone is in development over the years, but given Apple's usual focus on high end, designer products it has never seemed likely that any new mobile from the Californian firm would be a step down from this pedestal.
Recent reports in the Wall Street Journal said that Apple might even have a mobile handset worth just £120 on the market in the near future, pitching it perfectly at the pay as you go user in terms of price.
It is unlikely that Apple will reveal details of any new iPhone handset until June, so consumers will have to tide themselves over with the launch of the iPad 2 this week.
