Apple launches iPhone 4S
Friday, October 7, 2011 - 13:41:09
After endless months of speculation strung out by delays, the fifth iteration of the iPhone is here, although as some rightly predicted, it is called the iPhone 4S.
You could argue that the iPhone 4S is really just an incremental upgrade to last year's iPhone 4, although this would almost definitely be doing a disservice to the hard work which has gone into the handset to make it competitive in the modern market.
The dual core A5 processor is humming away under the surface, delivering twice the power of its predecessor. Meanwhile, the iPhone 4 will have seven times more graphical grunt, which means you are essentially getting a scaled-down iPad 2 squeezed into the palm of your hand.
Around the rear there is an eight megapixel camera with full HD 1080p video capture and LED flash. This is a step up from the five megapixel snapper of 2010 and in keeping with what rival handsets already offer.
From an aesthetic point of view, the iPhone 4S is identical to its precursor, which means many people probably saw the device out and about prior to its launch without realising that it was anything new. This means you get the same 3.5 inch retina display and although external differences are minimal, it is still a great looking smartphone.
Up to 64GB of onboard storage will grace the iPhone 4S, although both 32GB and 16GB versions will still be available.
One of Apple's biggest revelations is that the iPhone 4S will have something called Siri, which is essentially a voice-activated personal assistant built into the handset. Advanced voice commands mean you can ask your iPhone questions and in live demos it seems to work well, which is good news.
The sad news that Apple founder Steve Jobs passed away just a day after the iPhone 4S launched has put a sombre spin on this event and tributes are flooding in from all quarters.
