BlackBerry outage drives users elsewhere

The BlackBerry service outage which affected millions of users across the world last week and attracted high profile criticism is likely to result in many people selling their old mobile phone and switching to a rival manufacturer.
BlackBerry creator, Research in Motion, is likely to have lost around £63 million during the outage, with the potential for an even higher bill if it is unable to retain existing customers or if it is forced to pay out some kind of compensation to those affected.
The blackout occurred when a failsafe device ironically failed and led to a ripple effect of infrastructure disruption that circled the globe.
Over 70 million people use RIM's devices and the total amount spent by this group on the daily access to the services offered by the firm is over £7.6 million.
Compensation payouts will probably be higher due to legal action and liability claims made by users who experience disruption which disturbed their working day or resulted in data loss.
Of course BlackBerry owners who are thinking of switching to a different manufacturer may not have such a clear cut choice, given that Apple experienced technical issues of its own during the roll-out of the iOS 5 platform.
The servers from which users could download the update became overwhelmed at various points and even internet service providers like PlusNet in the UK reported that they were pushed close to breaking point because of the huge interest in the software.
UK web traffic rose by 20 per cent during the spike in iOS 5 downloads and there have been some horror stories of backup failures and data loss resulting from the update, but thankfully these have been isolated incidents, with most users experiencing a smooth process when adding in the new features
