Boosted mobile investment calls for greater recycling responsibilities

Analysts at Verdict revealed last month that British consumers will spend £23.1 billion on smartphones and tablets, annually, by the year 2018, which is a significant increase over the £7.9 billion which will have been spent over the course of 2013.
Spokesperson, Matthew Rubin, revealed that the significant increase in consumer spending on portable gadgets already seen is just the tip of the iceberg, with further boosts expected to take hold, as more people commit to regular upgrades of handheld devices.
The nature of the current mobile market means that people are encouraged to get a smartphone free as part of a pay monthly contract, keep it for 12 to 24 months and then ditch it in favour of a newer model.
The incremental nature of the payments means that companies can extract significant sums from customers without them feeling the pinch in the short term and, by handing out £10 to £40 a month, it is easy to afford a £500 handset once every two years.
Of course, the anticipated influx of mobile phones and the increased spending on consumer electronics in general is good news for manufacturers but problematic for anyone who is concerned about the state of the environment.
The constant churn of mobile phones means people will get through several devices a decade, creating tens of millions of unwanted old handsets in the process.
The good news is that there are plenty of ways to responsibly get rid of older smartphones, with the best option being to sell your mobile online to a recycling company, which will see that its precious and hazardous materials are appropriately handled, while netting you a bit of cash in return.
People of all ages are now tuning in to the benefits of smartphone ownership, which makes spreading the message of recycling even more important.
