Consolidation of UK mobile recycling industry anticipated

20:20 Mobile, a firm which is one of Europe's biggest distributors of handsets, has made predictions about the mobile recycling market in the UK, claiming that it will be consolidated over the coming year.
This statement has come almost 12 months after the firm opened the doors on its own recycling initiative, called Phone Recycle Bank. Within six months it had already shelled out a million pounds for used handsets, riding a growing wave of public interest in mobile recycling.
20:20 Mobile said that the annual number of handsets which are ripe for recycling is estimated to be around 30 million, with an increasing amount of competing firms all vying to get a piece of the pie.
Phone Recycle Bank aims not just for the consumer market but also for the dealer market, where it operates as a bespoke service which deals with top of the range smartphones, rather than bog standard handsets with minimal resale or scrap value.
20:20 Mobile's Jon Miller explained that he believes the international links and channels open to the firm put it in a prime place to fully exploit the growth in the number of individual consumers and businesses seeking to recycle mobiles and earn some cash in the mean time.
Because this operation gets a large number of high end handsets, it is able to recycle them within the UK market, although Mr Miller said that many mobiles are still sent overseas to emerging markets.
Mr Miller predicts that the recycling market, which he sees as having several major movers and shakers, will undergo a period of consolidation, giving it a very different composition in a year's time. He implies that being selective about which handsets it takes, will allow Phone Recycle Bank to stand out, while other recyclers go for the blanket approach.
