Council imposes ban on wrapping paper recycling

In the aftermath of December 25th, millions of conscientious Brits will be thinking about how to minimise the impact of their festive activities by recycling all of the cards, wrapping paper and packaging that typically accompany Christmas.
However, residents of Wolverhampton are out of luck if they were hoping that the local council would allow them to pop wrapping paper in their recycling bins for sustainable disposal, as a ban on doing so has been imposed, according to the Express and Star.
While Wolverhampton City Council is the only local authority in the surrounding area to take this action, it is not the only one in the UK to be of the opinion that dealing with wrapping paper is too difficult because of its plasticy nature.
This particular council has taken a tough stance on recycling and is using inspectors to make sure that waste has been correctly divided and placed into the right receptacles.
Vast amounts of wrapping paper are consumed in the UK each year, with Christmas clearly being a peak period. It is more expensive to handle wrapping paper, especially the kind which features a lot of printing and adornment, but some feel that councils should still take responsibility for this, as otherwise, it will simply end up at landfill sites.
People in Wolverhampton who want to recycle their wrapping paper may have to head further afield to achieve this, with other councils saying that residents can indeed use their recycling bins to get rid of this festive detritus.
Critics complained that the 166,000 leaflets distributed by Wolverhampton City Council to alert locals to the ban on wrapping paper in recycling bins, were not the greenest way to get the message across, but this is a challenge faced by many local authorities.
