Dell debut of Windows Phone 7 handset analysed

Dell has been making its mark on the smartphone industry in 2010 with the likes of the five inch Android-based Streak, but its first Windows Phone 7 handset, dubbed the Venue Pro, is looking more pocketable and mainstream than previous entries on the market.
Much of the limelight has been stolen by HTC since the Windows Phone 7 launch, because of the swathe of new handsets the Taiwanese firm announced to support Microsoft's platform, but the Dell Venue Pro offers a unique angle that might win it many fans.
The Venue Pro has a 4.1 inch AMOLED display that sits between the Samsung Omnia 7 and HTC HD7 in terms of sheer size. The vibrant touchscreen is not the only benefit of the Venue Pro because it has a full physical QWERTY keypad hidden by a slider mechanism
The keypad is not arranged in a landscape manner as you might expect, but follows on from the Palm Pre with a portrait placement. This could have resulted in squashed keys, but from the looks of preview shots, the large screen size has allowed Dell to be relatively generous and any superfluous functions have been shaved off or integrated to save space.
Microsoft's insistence on common hardware specs across the Windows Phone 7 range, means that keen followers since the launch will be unsurprised by the Venue Pro's 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM. This makes it just as responsive and nippy as its siblings.
On the rear a five megapixel camera with HD video capture is another common site amongst Windows Phone 7 handsets, but while the likes of the LG Optimus choose to emphasise the camera with eye-catching adornments, Dell is clearly catering to the business market, with its small, unobtrusive camera and LED flash placement.
With a premium quality finish, powerful innards and an excellent AMOLED display, the Dell Venue Pro will be a strong competitor.
