Eco-friendly reward scheme created

Recyclebank is joining forces with Transport for London to release a new smartphone application, which will encourage people who are travelling in the capital to avoid modes of transport which will increase their carbon footprint.
The app is called Re:route and it will allow mobile users to rethink the way they get from A to B, recommending alternative ways to travel which do not involve cars or public transport.
Recyclebank already operates a reward points system for people who dispose of their waste products in a sustainable way, so a similar set of points will be handed down to people who walk or cycle to their destinations, rather than jumping on the tube or in a taxi.
The points which are earned by people using mobile phones will then be redeemable at various partner businesses, such as Marks & Spencer, so there is a real incentive to actually avoid getting around in a way that could be harmful to the environment.
For the time being, the app is only available to those who use an iPhone handset, although a spokesperson for Recyclebank told BusinessGreen, that there is also an Android iteration of the software in development ahead of an official release in the next few months.
The app and its reward points could become particularly appealing during the 2012 Olympics, which are set to see an extra 800,000 people heading into the capital, causing inevitable congestion on the roads and railways.
People who walk or cycle to their destination will be able to avoid this traffic and, hopefully, improve their fitness levels, as well as earning some points and doing their bit for the environment, all in one fell swoop.
Recyclebank is looking to take on other established reward card schemes by forging a niche in the green end of the market.
