Four inch iPhone 5 screen unlikely

The latest batch of leaks and rumours surrounding the iPhone 5 suggest that Apple's next smartphone will not be getting a large four inch touchscreen display, despite previous speculation to the contrary.
The iPhone family has consistently featured a screen measuring 3.5 inches across the diagonal since its inception, with only the resolution increasing after Apple introduced the Retina Display on last year's iPhone 4.
Documents allegedly detailing the specs of the iPhone 5 now suggest that, at most, the fifth iteration will have a 3.7 inch display, with some claiming that it will still be 3.5 inches, according to DigiTimes.
If the screen remains the same size then there is a high likelihood that the overall design of the fifth iPhone will actually stick very close to that of the iPhone 4, perhaps implying that it will be an incremental update rather than a complete revision.
If on the other hand it increases to 3.7 inches, then there will be some inevitable aesthetic tweaks and a metal backplate, as opposed to the glass fascia of the current generation, is amongst the top runners in the current rumour mill.
Many industry insiders and fans of the iPhone will be hoping for a bigger screen because Apple has really been eclipsed in this respect by rivals. Samsung is apparently working on a 4.5 inch Super AMOLED Plus display for its next high end smartphone launch and between it and HTC, the standard for range-topping models has become 4.3 inches.
The whirlwind of conflicting information surrounding the fifth iPhone should settle down next month when the device is hopefully set to be revealed by Apple, but given Steve Jobs' recent resignation, it will be interesting to see whether he can spearhead this event or leave it to his replacement.
