Further security promised for mobile phone recycling

After data security firm BlackBelt Smartphone Defence announced that it had struck a deal with major mobile recycler, Mazuma, last week, it has now added another major client to its books.
BlackBelt will be offering its expertise to Fonebank, another of the UK's top mobile phone recycling companies, in order to delete user data prior to a phone being refurbished and sold on.
There have been many concerns about the security of mobile phone recycling, because some people are unsure as to whether or not they have completely removed personal information from their handset before they pop it in the post.
The opportunities for this data to be misused should be worrying, but, with first Mazuma and now Fonebank committing to eliminating errant information from all of their customers' handsets, the threats should fade.
From the point of view of the consumer this is certainly good news, because it means that when they are comparing prices for mobile phone recycling online, they can get a more competitive level of service from some of the country's top companies.
If Mazuma had retained the monopoly over mobile recycling security, then it could well have won over many more users than its rivals. However, with Fonebank stepping into the fray and actively choosing the same company as its competitor, there will be more of a level playing field for comparison.
Of course the real winner here is BlackBelt, which has clearly been able to demonstrate prowess when it comes to offering data deletion from old mobile phones.
Presumably, its systems and processes also allow for the procedure to happen quickly, as mobile phone recycling companies will want to process the handsets that they are sent as swiftly as possible, so as to recoup the value of the phone.
