Garden centre approaches 100 per cent recycling rate

In an ideal world, every single waste item that is generated by people and businesses should be reused or recycled.
In fact, many people believe that reaching this level of eco-friendliness is the only way that humanity can continue to exist sustainably, without irrevocably damaging the planet.
While the UK has made efforts to improve the rates of recycling over the last few years, with many counties now pushing past the 50 per cent mark, one garden centre in Cheshire is putting the rest of us to shame.
Horticulture Week reports that Bents Garden and Home centre of Glazebury recently published a 98.9 per cent waste recycling figure, which means that it is getting very close to being 100 per cent recycling-friendly.
Spokesperson, Matthew Bent, said that the garden centre had put all of its efforts into ensuring that it could recycle as much of the waste that it produces as possible, which is why it has made such headway towards reaching its ambitious goal.
Bents relies on the help of its customers as well as its staff to ensure that as much recycling and reusing is carried out as possible.
The plastic plant pots which it provides, for example, can be returned after use to be recycled and customers are incentivised with 50p off their next purchase.
The recycling initiative at the garden centre is just one part of a five pronged plan, which managers set out in order to improve the eco-friendliness of the business.
It is also working on improving the efficiency of its use of water, looking at raising living standards through healthy habits, enhancing its social responsibility in the local community and focusing on fair trade.
Further reductions in its carbon footprint are being made by growing the majority of the plants it sells on-site, which makes it a shining example for other companies to follow.
