Getting your iPhone ready for trade-in

With new iPhones set to launch at Apple’s event this week, many existing owners will be pondering whether it’s time to update their phones. If having looked at the specs of the new phones you do decide to sell your iPhone in order to get the latest model, what should you do to get your old one ready for trade-in and ensure you get the best price for it?
Firstly give your phone a thorough inspection. Take pictures of any scratches or damage so that you know if any further damage has been incurred in transit. If the phone is looking a bit grubby, give it a clean. The ideal way to do this is with a soft cloth, like a lens cloth, that is lint-free. For particularly stubborn marks try moistening the cloth slightly, but don’t get it wet. Don’t use chemicals like aerosol sprays or household cleaners as these are likely to damage the phone. On many iPhone models the glass has an oleophobic coating that repels oil and any form of abrasive cleaning will damage this.
You also need to ensure that you erase all of your personal data safely before disposing of the phone. Make sure anything you want to retain is backed up, then reset the phone to its factory settings. Once you’ve done that sign off from your Apple ID before going to the General settings option, selecting Reset, then choosing Erase all content and settings. Also of course remember to remove your SIM card and any memory cards you may have added.
With your phone all ready to go, you can look around for the best price. The more you can get for your old phone the less you’ll have to find to finance a new one.
