HTC plans to package new smartphone without charger

The average British home will not only be packed with old mobile phones that could be recycled, but also the chargers that came with them and have accumulated in drawers and boxes over the years.
In the past, many mobile phone manufacturers produced proprietary chargers which used a unique connection that was specific to a single range or even a single model.
However, this practice has largely been eroded, as the adoption of USB ports for charging and data became more prevalent. Only Apple has stuck to its guns and insisted on using a connector type for charging and data transfer that no one else can copy.
Now it looks like HTC is taking the step to actually eradicate the tradition of bundling a charger with every single new smartphone which it sells.
According to a spokesperson from network provider O2, the Taiwanese manufacturer will be announcing a brand new smartphone at some point next month, which will not feature a charger in the box when it is bought.
Presumably it will use the standard miniature USB connection now found commonly on smartphones, which means many people will already have a compatible charger sitting around at home from their old device.
This will be beneficial for consumers because it means less electronic detritus that they have to deal with. It will also be good for the environment, since HTC will not be producing tons of chargers unnecessarily.
The phone that will actually lack the charger in the box has not yet been announced, although it is speculated that it could be the HTC Elation.
The Elation was the subject of an accidental leak earlier this month, when HTC briefly posted a product page outlining its technical details online.
Running Windows Phone 8 and with a quad core processor, it is thought to be more powerful than HTC's Android-based One X.
