Lancashire council launching battery recycling scheme

Hundreds of millions of batteries are used each year by Brits, with many people picking single use cells and simply sending them to landfill, once their charge has been exhausted.
Indeed, even the rechargeable batteries integrated into most mobile phones can simply be thrown away or left to moulder in a drawer. This is hazardous, since the materials used in batteries can be damaging to people and the environment if they leak.
The good news is that it is easy to recycle batteries if you take the initiative. Now Fylde Borough Council in Lancashire is helping residents to recycle batteries from old mobile phones and other gadgets, with a household collection scheme.
It is the first council in the whole of Lancashire to create such an initiative and it will be providing locals with a small reusable bag, into which they can place unwanted batteries from old mobile phones and laptops, as well as common AA and other size cells, that are found within digital cameras, TV remotes and many more items.
Council spokesperson, Albert Pounder, said that the local authority has worked hard to establish a greener, more eco-friendly level of waste collection service in Fylde over almost a decade. He said that making the process of recycling batteries as convenient and uncomplicated as possible, would help reduce the amount of harmful waste produced by households and also encourage people to do their bit.
Recycling company, Valpak, will be handling the compliance side of the new service and said that one of the main ways to reach a sustainable state of waste disposal across the UK, was to follow this path.
Battery recycling is available in other counties across the country, but it is far from ubiquitous. If you have an old mobile phone battery, then there is often a recycling point available at a local shop or centre.
