The finger-friendly BlackBerry Touch 9860 has been snapped in a picture posted on the internet. It revealed further details about this upcoming smartphone from Canadian manufacturer Research in Motion (RIM).
The Touch 9860 is a significant arrival for several reasons, the most obvious of which is its total lack of the traditional BlackBerry physical QWERTY keypad. Instead, this is a touch-only device, with just a small selection of capacitive buttons sitting along the bottom edge of the front side.
Not since the BlackBerry Storm 2 has RIM kicked out the physical keypad altogether, as even the Torch had a slide-out selection of buttons to help make the most of the web browsing and emailing capabilities.
It was originally thought that RIM would officially unveil the Touch 9860 during an event last week but instead all that was shown was the Bold Touch 9900, a hybrid device which follows in the footsteps of previous bold handsets with its physical keypad but looks to the future with a small touchscreen display.
For those who are tired of QWERTY buttons but want to enjoy the upcoming BlackBerry OS 7.0, it looks like the Touch 9860 will be your best bet. According to CrackBerry, it could run a 1.2GHz processor and even have Near Field Communication (NFC) technology onboard for contactless payments.
RIM has not completely rewritten the book with the Touch 9860 because there is an optical trackpad for scrolling and interaction, although if the touchscreen is correctly implemented, then it should be largely redundant.
The poor reception of its previous two touch only handsets may make RIM a little more cautious with this latest arrival. This means it is likely to stick more closely to the blueprints of its rivals rather than innovate with a quirky feature or two.
