Leicestershire passes recycling record
Wednesday, August 22, 2012 - 16:20:28
The county of Leicestershire has improved on its previous recycling figures in the past 12 months, with the council announcing that 56.21 per cent of all waste was dealt with in an environmentally friendly, sustainable manner.
This equates to almost 175,000 tonnes of refuse, which council spokesperson, Richard Blunt, pointed out would be more than 17 times heavier than the Olympic stadium in which the 2012 games were recently held.
The year on year rise for recycling in Leicestershire was put at 2.2 per cent and this means that it is one of the UK's most prolific operators in this area.
The county has a deadline of 2017, by which point it hopes to recycle, reuse or compost 58 per cent of the waste which it generates and based on current figures, it seems to be well on the way to achieving this.
The council noted that there are a combination of reasons for the improvements in recycling levels in Leicestershire. This includes the improved and broader range of doorstep collection options, for people who want to recycle as comprehensively as possible in their own home.
The council also made improvements to the recycling centres which can be used by the public and set up a treatment plant, which can help to compost household waste, so that it can be reused effectively and safely.
Residents have also been encouraged to do more at home in order to reduce the amount of waste that is being produced in the first place. This includes schemes to help people compost food waste and also initiatives which look to help people reuse products, rather than simply throwing them in the bin.
Mobile phone recycling is a great way for people across the UK to cut down on waste, act in an environmentally responsible manner and also get some cash back for their unwanted handsets.
