Major recycling initiative announced by Amazon

As one of the world’s largest e-commerce brands, Amazon wields a huge amount of influence, but has come under criticism for the lack of sustainability in its current practices.
Thankfully this week it announced that it will be investing in recycling programmes and green energy schemes both in its native US and here in the UK, according to the Verge.
British customers will be pleased to hear that part of its eco-friendly efforts will include the installation of solar power cells which will help to provide energy for the majority of its premises across the country. The ultimate aim is to switch to 100 per cent renewable power, or to invest in certificates which effectively offset any carbon generated by the non-renewable sources it is still forced to use.
Meanwhile its recycling aims involve counteracting the vast volumes of cardboard it uses to deliver products to customers around the world.
Crucially the $10 million in funding that Amazon is setting aside to achieve this will not go into actively cutting down on cardboard use, but will instead be made available to help improve the recycling infrastructures in various major cities.
This is a particularly relevant move in the US, where many millions of people do not have the ability to put cardboard waste out for collection. Here in the UK this is now the norm in most places, but it is not as feasible in a much larger country.
Of course ideally there will also be steps taken to ensure that the unnecessary use of packaging materials is eliminated, or at least curbed to the point of acceptability. Whatever the case, it is certainly positive to see a behemoth like Amazon doing something about the issue of recycling and sustainability, even if it could have happened sooner.
