Mobile manufacturers to receive new green ranking

At the moment, the best way to determine whether or not a mobile phone manufacturer is eco-friendly is to check out the Guide to Greener Electronics, produced twice a year by Greenpeace.
This gives you a fairly good idea about how environmentally conscious a particular company has been before you decide to buy one of its handsets.
However, there could soon be a second ranking scheme in place that judges manufacturers across a range of variables, to help consumers make the right choice.
Waste Management World reports that CTO Development has announced its intention to start assigning certificates of sustainability to mobile companies.
This is significant because CTO Development has over two decades of experience carrying out the same practices for other IT and electronics firms, which puts it in a good position to adequately judge the sustainability of a particular manufacturer's actions.
Unfortunately, this new ranking system is not expected to go live until at least 2014, because it is still in the early stages of being developed.
In the meantime, it is best for consumers to look at the table published by Greenpeace last November, in order to assess the current competing companies.
Top of the list is Nokia, which has always been impressive in striving to behave as ethically as possible. Second place goes to Apple, thanks to its impressive recycling record and the fact that its smartphones tend to be very energy efficient.
Even seventh place BlackBerry is to be praised for its efforts to eliminate the use of harmful materials in the construction of its smartphones.
As long as you choose to recycle your old mobile phone once you have finished using it, you will be able to achieve a better degree of sustainability in your smartphone usage.
