Mobile phone app encourages more recycling

A new application has been developed for smartphones in order to make it much easier for people living in Leicestershire to recycle their unwanted goods.
While it is relatively easy to get rid of glass, paper and leftover food in an environmentally sound way these days, most larger and less disposable items can be tougher to get rid of in a way that feels green.
The new application called Freeuse is designed to help people in Leicestershire post adverts online which will list their unwanted furniture, baby equipment and perfectly serviceable but otherwise unloved waste, so that other locals can register their interest.
Support from the Leicestershire Waste Partnership ensures that there is plenty of backing behind the scheme and the app links into the Freeuse website, which has been running in the county over the last two years.
The smartphone version of the site actually harnesses your mobile's GPS capabilities to add location-based data to your listing, making it easy for anyone who wants to collect an item you are offering to find you.
The Freeuse app is even useful if you have something which no one else might want to take off your hands. This is because it will indicate the location of your nearest recycling centre so that you can efficiently extricate any items which you no longer need from your home.
Spokesperson, Guy Jackson, explained that Freeuse has been aiding the county council in its efforts to reduce the amount of rubbish which is carted off to be dumped at landfill sites.
He pointed out that the popularity of smartphones amongst the general public meant that expanding the website to operate on a mobile platform made eminent sense and he believes that mobile recycling will increase as a direct result.
