Mobile phone recycling success story
Monday, March 5, 2012 - 14:00:23
A UK company based in Falkirk has become one of the most successful firms in the mobile phone recycling market, since it started trading in 2000, with annual turnover coming close to topping £20 million last year and growth still projected in 2012.
The company in question is Redeem and it has recently been acquired by Curt Hopkins and Pete Petrondas, who want to help the firm achieve its goals and provide people in the UK with even more ways of getting rid of their unwanted handsets.
Each month around 200,000 mobiles are sent to Redeem to be recycled and its clients include some of the biggest names in the business. It works on behalf of O2, Tesco and Sainsbury's, to name but a few of its major partners.
Redeem is also used by a number of charitable organisations to help raise money through mobile phone recycling. The 300-strong list of good causes with which it does business include Oxfam, Macmillan Cancer Support and Comic Relief.
In its early days, Redeem was involved in the recycling of used printer ink cartridges, but this soon expanded to include used MP3 players and, eventually, games consoles and mobile phones.
The weekly throughput of refurbished handsets which Redeem sells on via online auctions sites can reach almost a quarter of a million in particularly successful periods, according to the firm.
Redeem ensures that its activities are ethical and also makes sure that its partners and clients also adhere to a code of responsible trading. This includes things like guaranteed pay and good working conditions for employees.
Its new owners have experience in the mobile recycling industry, with Mr Petrondas previously having had a hand in the creation of Environfone back at the very beginning of the last decade.
