Mobile recycling firm announces strategy shift

Redeem is one of the UK’s biggest mobile recyclers and yet its activities are generally masked by the fact that it works with better known brands in order to help them offer trade-in services for their customers.
One of its most noteworthy partners is network provider O2, which recently confirmed that it had processed over two million old handsets with Redeem. It is also responsible for operating the Envirofone brand, although the arrival of new chief exec, Paul Adams, has seen a change in tactics which should bolster Redeem as a household name in its own right, according to Mobile Today.
Adams explained that he was looking to take Redeem in a new direction, away from the volatility of certain parts of the market and towards a place in which it can offer a broader range of services to its industry partners.
In short, this means as well as recycling old phones, the firm will be looking to offer a wider array of refurbishing and reselling solutions which are becoming increasingly popular in the UK at the moment.
The slowdown in the sale of new handsets, as evidenced by the historic dip in iPhone sales, shows that consumers are less willing to splash out on a brand new device every 12 to 24 months as they were in the past. This is, in part, as a result of smartphone technology hitting a plateau and making a direct upgrade less desirable.
Furthermore, there is the booming second hand mobile market which can account for the reduction in new sales, with recycling companies looking to benefit from this trend.
Selling an old phone that is in a moderate to good condition will usually result in it being restored and resold, which is the most sustainable way to make use of the second hand devices that are flooding the market today.
