Mobile recycling firm enjoys strong growth

Last year mobile recycling company, Redeem, managed to handle a total of 1.9 million handsets across its global network of schemes, working with partners in 24 countries to pay £65 million to people who sold their old phones.
Redeem absorbed well known industry player, Envirofone, last year and has also established strong ties to mobile networks, including O2, to which it provides its recycling services.
The company opened up shop in a number of new regions of the world, including Dubai. And it managed to boost revenues by over a quarter, according to Mobile News.
As well as buying old mobile phones to be refurbished and recycled around the world, it also sells functional handsets on in 23 different countries.
Company spokesperson, Claes Svensson, said that the emergence of the mobile recycling market as an economic force was being fuelled by increased consumer awareness of the value contained within unwanted smartphones.
Svensson compared owning a mobile phone to buying a car, with people realising that just as they can sell their car second hand, so too an older device can be resold further down the line, to unlock some of the residual value.
The trends in mobile recycling for 2015 were identified by Svensson, including the prediction that a growing number of companies will put an emphasis on being able to provide customers with data deletion services.
Many are concerned about the extent to which personal information is retained by old mobile phones. And so if recycling companies can promise to completely erase this sensitive data when handling devices, they will be more appealing to modern consumers.
Recycling of a wider array of electronic devices is also thought to be something that firms will highlight in 2015, allowing consumers to get cash for more than just their old mobiles.
