Mobiles must be more sustainable, experts urge

The manufacturers who produce mobile phones should make a greater effort to ensure that their use in the modern world is more sustainable and green. This is the opinion of expert James Taplin, who wants to see a broader degree of responsibility being taken by firms which make billions from the flourishing mobile market.
Mr Taplin is well aware that most manufacturers are working on the gradual improvement of production processes to increase efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint of phones, at the same time as using greener materials, so that mobile phone recycling is even better for the environment.
What Mr Taplin wants to see is a greater emphasis on how the all-encompassing nature of modern smartphone functionality is allowing for a general reduction in carbon emissions, because modern consumers are required to buy far fewer separate gadgets as they have a multifunctional mobile to hand.
The example given is that with GPS navigation integrated into most smartphones, there is no need for a consumer to go out and buy yet another unit when they are looking to get directions in their cars. Here the phone acts to replace the current option and means the energy expended in producing the standalone unit will be saved.
Recently, South Korean manufacturer LG, said that it would be completely cutting eco-magnesium from its handsets within two years, echoing a wider industry push towards sustainability and environmental friendliness.
A recent annual study once again put Nokia at the top of the green list of mobile manufacturers, with Sony Ericsson taking second place. This list is based on both recycling initiatives and the way in which the firms have acted to cut down on the use of hazardous materials when they produce the handsets for which they have become famous.
