The push to increase mobile phone recycling is gathering momentum in the UK, but this is a global issue which impacts countries around the world. So the news that American network provider T-Mobile will be campaigning to encourage customers to donate old phones as part of a charity drive will be positively received everywhere.
Phone Arena reports that the firm has pledged to match donations with a minimum contribution of $1 million (£741,000) as it sells old phones to generate cash for good causes, including feeding and housing homeless people.
Any device, no matter its age, is eligible to be collected as part of this scheme, with the network pointing out that the recycling process can help to recover the precious materials stored within all electronics, including copper, silver and gold. This means that the components alone are worth around £20 after processing; a figure which is multiplied many times when modern devices in good working order are donated.
It is estimated that American mobile users ditch 135 million old mobiles each year. This matches proportionally with the turnover rates in the UK, encouraged by upgrade offers and regular releases of cutting edge handsets.
The mountains of electronic waste which are produced as a result of current trends pose a threat to the environment and so recycling campaigns like this help to spread the message that there is a cleaner alternative option available to consumers.
Any British mobile owner who sells their old smartphone online has the option to donate the cash to charity, or to use it to cover part of the cost of a new handset. Many recycling firms offer donations as an option to streamline this process, which makes the whole experience even more convenient for people who have busy lives.
