New electronics recycling scheme will make process more sustainable

An EU project to make it easier to recycle electronics in an efficient way has just received a £1.56 million funding boost, which should help organisers pave the way for a circular economy that spans the continent, according to LetsRecycle.com.
The CRM Recovery project is unique in its focus on the entire recycling process right from the point at which electronic waste is collected.
Taking place across four countries, including the UK, it is attempting to find ways to help reclaim more of the precious raw materials which are found in unwanted products like mobile phones, PCs and TV sets, so that they can be reused in the manufacture of new models.
At the moment, close to two fifths of all electronic waste items end up in landfill sites. And with a finite amount of raw materials available on the planet, it makes sense to ensure that recycling is a priority to avoid massive amounts of wastage.
The project is setting out an ambitious goal of boosting the recovery of crucial raw materials by five per cent across the EU. And since it is set to run between now and 2019, there is a relatively small window of time within which to achieve this.
Organisers are hoping to look for a connection between the methods used to collect electronic waste and the proportion of raw materials which are subsequently recovered. This includes things like kerbside collections and postal service use.
When you sell your old mobile phone, most recycling firms will provide you with a free envelope that can be used to post your unwanted handset directly to them. And it is likely that this is one of the best methods available, since it keeps the item safe and, in many cases, allows it to be refurbished and resold rather than recycled.
