New smartphone processor can handle 4K resolutions

This week processor manufacturer, Qualcomm, revealed details of its new Snapdragon 805 chip, which will have four physical cores and the ability to handle 4K Ultra HD video footage, according to TechRadar.
While many high end mobiles of the moment, including LG's G2, use the current-gen Snapdragon 800, its replacement will be faster thanks to the inclusion of a new graphics chip, which will be 40 per cent more powerful and give it enough grunt to handle 4K's additional pixels.
It was previously suggested that the Snapdragon 800 would pack plenty of punch and be 4K-ready, although this has not been put into practice, so the 805 will probably be the first smartphone processor to break new ground in this area.
As well as being able to play back 4K video clips without any problem, the 805 will also have the ability to record 4K footage and make mincemeat of any stereoscopic 3D requirements, although most consumers will be indifferent to this last feature.
With a 2.5GHz native clock speed, the 805 will be marginally quicker than its predecessor in other areas, but even small improvements can make apps and interfaces feel a lot faster.
For the moment, the idea of having something capable of powering 4K Ultra HD in your pocket is attractive if a little irrelevant, because smartphone display technology still needs to make significant leaps forward in resolution to even make this worthwhile.
In addition, there are a tiny number of 4K compatible TVs on the market, most of which are extortionately expensive and far from the reach of mainstream buyers.
But future-proofing smartphone hardware is sensible, because two years down the line, things could look very different and Qualcomm's Snapdragon 805 may seem like it was a worthwhile investment.
