Nokia revives 3310 and kick starts resale price war

Wednesday, March 1, 2017 - 11:36:55

When it was announced that Finnish communications firm, Nokia, would be bringing the 3310 back to life after more than a decade since it was discontinued, the news was met with a mixture of excitement and scepticism in the media.

The original 3310 touched down in 2000 and lasted for half a decade before its production run ended. And as with most old phones, its second hand value steadily declined over time - a fact that was compounded by the relative immaturity of the mobile recycling market.

However, now that the much loved 3310 brand is being reincarnated in 2017, prices for the older model have begun to skyrocket, according to the Sun.

Second hand examples are selling for more than £50, while pristine models which were never used have been making around £200 online. For people who have an old 3310 sitting gathering dust in a drawer somewhere, there has never been a better time to get it out and sell it, especially as this nostalgic bump in its price may well be short lived.

The new Nokia 3310 is not exactly like its predecessor, although it does share many of the core design tenets that helped to make it appealing in the first place. It will come in a variety of colours and will offer 2.5G network connectivity, allowing for basic online functionality which cannot hope to match modern 4G devices in terms of speed.

It will also be based on the ageing S30+ operating system, rather than opting for Android. And while this may sound like a real hindrance, the fact that the 3310 will be able to last for up to a month if left on standby without requiring a recharge, it could be the ideal backup phone for avid users to select.
