O2 is going green

This week network provider O2 laid out a set of sustainability plans which it will put into action over the next three years, to ensure that its business is much more eco-friendly than it ever has been in the past.
Perhaps most ambitious is its goal to reduce its emissions by 50 per cent by 2015, which will require that it makes significant changes to daily operations if success is to be achieved.
It will also be helping youngsters to go green by rolling out schemes which will educate and train people in the best practices for energy efficiency and environmental sensitivity.
By saving four million tonnes of carbon each year, O2 will be going further than many other network providers in the UK.
Earlier this week, O2's headquarters in Slough were completely deserted, because the company had been trying out an initiative by which 2000 employees were requested to work at home for a day.
This not only saved people time by preventing them from having to travel to work, but also money and that all-important carbon impact.
O2 chief execs Ronan Dunnes explained that the biggest companies need to take an active stance in the fight for ecological sustainability and he said that his firm would be well placed to make a difference, thanks to its 22 million customers and engagement with technological advances.
O2 already offers a mobile phone recycling service and it will presumably continue to promote this option for any customers who have recently upgraded and want to get a bit of cash back for their old handset.
Mobile recycling is one of the best things that an average user can do if they want to lead a greener life, because it means used handsets are not going to waste in a landfill site or lingering unloved in drawers at home.
