O2 reveals more mobile recycling stats

Earlier this month mobile network, O2, confirmed that its customers have recycled in excess of two million old phones thanks to its Think Big campaign. In order to demonstrate the significant impact that this has had, it has provided some interesting data about the benefits of its recycling activities.
Last year, its mobile recycling scheme generated £51 a minute for customers who were selling their old devices back to O2 in order to get hold of a little extra cash or cut the cost of upgrading to a new model.
With all the handsets that were recycled rather than sent to landfill, O2 has cut its carbon emissions by 10,000 tonnes and managed to use 26 million litres of water less than would otherwise have been possible.
This is equivalent to removing 2,000 vehicles from the roads of the UK, or powering 10 homes for 70 years in a row. And since £135 million has been paid back to consumers through the scheme since it was launched in 2009, the benefits are being felt in many different areas.
The iPhone 4S was found to be the single most commonly recycled phone, representing almost a tenth of the total number of handsets which were sold back to O2, according to the Burton Mail. In the past year, the newer iPhone 5S took the title of the nation’s most recycled phone, generating £4.5 million in repayments to owners.
O2 has managed to position itself at the forefront of the UK’s mobile phone recycling revolution over the past seven years, adopting a greener, more sustainable stance that has also helped to spread the recycling message to customers across all networks. And since anyone can sell their old phone online and compare offers from different recycling firms, consumers remain in the driving seat.
