Oxfordshire leads recycling push

The county of Oxfordshire is home to some of the most prolific recyclers in the UK, according to an article in the Oxford Mail.
Sixty per cent of all waste which is produced by its residents is sent off to be recycled, which is well above average rates for the country as a whole.
Spokesperson, Paul Mocroft, said that while Oxfordshire was not quite at the top of the tree in terms of recycling saturation, it was getting close to becoming the UK's greenest county.
He said that the main reason for the success was that all sorts of materials were being collected from the homes of residents, making it much easier for people to get on with their lives and still do their bit for the environment.
Collecting food waste for recycling has made one of the most significant differences in recent years, according to Mr Mocroft.
He pointed out that there is still more that the county can do to up its green credentials, including offering recycling for things like batteries on residents' doorsteps. This is already a service offered in other areas and so would make sense in Oxfordshire.
With almost two thirds of waste recycled over the past year, there was an increase of over five per cent when compared with the levels measured in 2010.
The national average for waste recycling currently sits at 42.5 per cent, which is just a single percentage point higher than it was in the previous year.
Clearly the choice between landfill and recycling is more attractive to councils, as one spokesperson said that it is now up to £90 a tonne to simply dump waste and forget about it. Recycling on the other hand can generate cash for councils and help to protect the environment.
