Package recycling initiative reaches landmark donation level

TerraCycle, a project operating in the UK which aims to make recycling a charitable process, has just announced that it has handed out £100,000 to good causes across the country, since it was established back in 2009.
The idea behind TerraCycle is an intriguing one, because while most people expect their local council to collect the packaging which various products and items are housed in prior to sale, this organisation will actually help you turn unwanted waste into cash for charities.
Every piece of packaging which is collected by TerraCycle results in a one pence donation going to the charity of your choice, so if you hand in lots of waste at the same time, you can make a healthy sum for a worthy initiative.
It collects everything from mobile phone packaging and toothpaste tubes to coffee refill bags and baby wipe containers.
Once it has these products, it is able to recycle them and create rubbish bins and plastic plant pots. Some of the best quality materials are actually used to create even more useful and durable products, like pencil cases or sports bags.
All of the packaging waste collected by TerraCycle has so far allowed it to pass on £100,000 to charities and it is worth remembering that it has also saved tons of items from simply being dumped in landfill sites, as might have otherwise been the case.
The organisation operates with the help of hundreds of 'Brigades' of collectors across the country, with an estimated 311,000 people getting involved.
TerraCycle is not only based in the UK, but actually began life in the US and has since spread its efforts internationally, in order to help improve the state of recycling and also raise much needed cash for respectable charities.
