Police recycle uninsured cars

Police in the town of Rugby have announced that several cars which were seized following a clamp down on uninsured drivers, have been fully recycled at a local plant, according to AboutMyArea.
The authorities ran a scheme in September to improve road safety and limit the likelihood of uninsured drivers causing accidents and having no means of making reparations.
This was also aimed at attacking criminal groups which use uninsured vehicles for malicious means, with numberplate recognition technology deployed to identify culprits and bring them to justice.
The police only needed to run the operation over the course of two days, resulting in 200 stops and the seizure of 14 vehicles.
As well as looking to reduce the number of uninsured drivers on the road, police also targeted people who were going over the speed limit, or had outstanding road-based convictions to answer to.
Eight of the cars which were taken ended up back in the possession of the owners after they had satisfied the law by paying any fines and buying insurance. However, six did not meet these requirements and so were sent to a metal recycling facility, where they were crushed and will be turned back into parts for new cars.
This week the police took the scheme one step further and displayed a crushed car, formed into the shape of a cube, as part of the initial recycling process, outside the local council buildings in Rugby town centre.
This is obviously a novel thing to see, as well as a vision of a destroyed vehicle which will be difficult to get out of the mind. Hopefully, this will improve road safety by making people think about the consequences.
The winter is always a treacherous time for road travel and people across the country are advised to take care in adverse weather and never drive after having a festive drink.
