Prisoners tasked with aiding recycling effort.

Prisoners based in Guernsey are taking part in a new initiative which is helping to improve the recycling of metal on the island, according to BBC News.
Guernsey is hoping to improve the total percentage of waste which is recycled, rather than simply sent to landfill and it hopes to reach a target of 70 per cent as soon as possible, with this new scheme being integrated into its efforts.
Prisoners are able to work their way through large amounts of scrap metal and electronic waste, which includes everything from PC hard drives to mobile phones. They remove the usable, recyclable materials and then these are sent away to be properly handled at facilities on the mainland.
The prisoners who participate in this scheme are actually able to gain valuable qualifications as a result, which means that their rehabilitation can be a useful tool in helping them find work, once they have completed their sentences and returned to normal society.
Guernsey Recycling spokesperson, Alan Crowe, explained that this manual method of metal recycling was far cheaper than using expensive equipment, particularly on a small island. The million pound investment required for partially automated metal recycling, even on a small scale, is not something that is currently attainable.
Instead, this current scheme means that metal recycling and the disposal of electronic waste can be handled cheaply and effectively on Guernsey, while also helping prisoners to achieve NVQ qualifications which can be applied later.
Taking advantage of prisoners to work with recycling materials is certainly an interesting idea and it is one that might spread to the UK, if it proves to be a successful endeavour in Guernsey. This green approach to waste is not only beneficial to the environment but might have a positive effect on society as a whole.
