Rumours of next-gen Samsung smartphone emerge

The web is alight with tales of a new Samsung smartphone based on Android and sporting an appropriately impressive number of high specification hardware components, with a release date set for some point in the first half of 2011.
Engadget unearthed images and detailed specifications which appear to originate from within Samsung itself, via a leaked slide, so they are thought to be genuine, although there is always room for a dedicated hoaxer to get their work shown around the world, so a touch of scepticism is advisable.
On paper, the Samsung smartphone sounds simply epic. A 4.5 inch Super AMOLED2 display shows it has half an inch on the Galaxy S and Omnia 7, while presumably possessing hardware tweaks to merit the '2' tag. Add to this a 1.2GHz processor, 14.4Mbps download speeds via HSPA and Android Gingerbread and you have a thoroughly cutting edge piece of kit.
Other technical specs suggest 16GB of onboard storage will be present, along with an eight megapixel digital camera that can shoot 1080p full HD videos. What is even more impressive is the fact that it will be able to playback video in 1080p as well, suggesting that the display will have a resolution that outpaces that of the iPhone 4's Retina Display.
The images included in the leaked slide, imply that the Samsung smartphone will not only be packed with impressive tech, but also feature a super-skinny frame that makes all current competition look bloated. The one issue with these images is that they allegedly depict a non-Samsung device, which throws a spanner in the works in terms of authenticity.
Whatever the outcome, any news about next generation smartphones is intriguing and should get fans excited about the potential for the top end of the market in 2011.
