Samsung announces second smartphone in Wave range

Just as Windows Phone 7 launches, there is news of a new smartphone from Samsung that is based on its own in-house Bada operating system - perhaps serving as a reminder that Microsoft is not the only firm trying to push its new platform onto the market.
The Samsung Wave II will follow on from the original Wave without changing the basic formula. That means it has a 3.7 inch display but instead of Super AMOLED technology this will use Super Clear LCD.
While most people will not really notice a change to the display tech, Samsung says that the new Wave II will be able to resist reflections in bright daylight, keep greasy finger prints to a minimum and take scratches on the chin.
A five megapixel camera is carried over from the original Wave, complete with 720p HD video capture and you get a 1GHz processor with 2GB of storage space for files and downloads.
Samsung has tweaked a few of the software features for the Wave II, with 3G maps for navigation and geo-tagging now accessible at any time. The bespoke Dolphin web browser is also now in its second iteration, offering smoother online interactivity.
Samsung has followed its rivals by amalgamating social networking, contacts and email into a single Social Hub service. This is definitely a sensible move as it means the Wave II will be on a level playing field with rival phones from the likes of HTC and Sony Ericsson.
Samsung has been planning the Wave II for several months and the confirmation of its UK launch will definitely be good news for anyone who is unimpressed by Android, indifferent about Windows Phone 7 or outpriced by anything from Apple. A December launch for the Wave II is scheduled and both pricing and network affiliation are still to be announced.
