Scotland kicks off new reuse and recycling campaign

A new campaign to improve the rates of recycling and also instil a culture of reuse and repair, rather than disposal, has kicked off in Scotland this month, harnessing the #MakeThingsLast hashtag to ensure that its message can spread on social media.
Scotland has already shown its commitment to taking a proactive stance on waste, recently introducing a 5p fee for any carrier bag that consumers want to take from high street stores. And now this campaign will be used to alter the way people think about the products that they do buy.
By engaging Scottish consumers via social media, the government is hoping to find out about how people are responding to a number of ideas relating to the reuse and recycling of items.
This includes having a conversation about the benefits of modular mobile phone technologies, which will allow people to upgrade individual components of their smartphones, rather than buying a brand new one every 24 months.
Mobile phone recycling is already a viable option across the UK, to help tackle any waste that this industry might generate. But modular phones would potentially make the market eve more sustainable, not only in terms of reuse but also by making it easier for companies to reclaim the precious materials used in the production of modern handsets.
Another of the aims of the scheme is to see how people respond to the idea of leasing clothing rather than buying it outright, to cut down on the number of unworn items that are piling up in homes across the country. Almost a third of all items of clothing have not been put on by their owners in the past 12 months, which like old mobile phones sitting in drawers, can lead to a fairly unsustainable state of affairs.
