Sony unveils first Android 4.0 handset

Sony has been a little slow out of the starting blocks when it comes to introducing new handsets based on the latest Google smartphone operating system, Android 4.0. For example, the Xperia S was unveiled with version 2.3 onboard and the promise of a subsequent upgrade.
However, an event in China this week, saw the first unveiling of a model which will come with Android 4.0 straight out of the box.
The handset in question is the Xperia Neo L and, by all accounts, it will be a modestly powered mobile, sporting a 1GHz processor, with a single physical core which looks a little limp, compared to the dual and quad core powerhouses of today.
With a four inch display, it will at least have plenty of room to make Android 4.0 look its best and Sony has been receiving plenty of praise for its recent modifications to the basic interface, so expect Facebook integration and other useful features as standard.
In terms of photographic prowess, the Xperia Neo L will have a five megapixel camera on the back that can shoot video in HD, which is becoming a minimum requirement for modern mobile.
A little over a year ago, this kind of technology would have been considered at the top of the class, but the pace of evolution in the mobile market means that those who are willing to wait, will often bag a bargain further down the line.
The design of the Xperia Neo L is relatively stykush, although, at 1.2 centimetres thick, it is going to be chunkier than most of its more expensive rivals.
Although the Xperia Neo L has not been confirmed for launch in the UK, its budget credentials and use of Android 4.0 make it a prime candidate for release on British shores.
