Surrey encounters recycling issues

A new report has found that although over half of all the waste collected in Surrey is recycled, the rate at which this is increasing has hit something of a plateau, leading local councillors to call for changes to the current strategy.
Back in 2007, just under a third of all waste in Surrey was recycled, but the council had major ambitions to improve this and was scheduled to increase this to 70 per cent by 2015. While some boroughs have come close, with the current leader hitting 58 per cent, there is still a long way to go before the county comes close to realising its ambitions.
New targets have been created, with 2020 now the year by which the council hopes to recycle 70 per cent of all waste and, additionally, reduce the amount of rubbish that it sends to landfill to zero. This would help it to make major savings, so there is a financial incentive to achieve this, as well as the simple motivation of being environmentally friendly.
One of the chief obstacles to improved recycling rates in Surrey is seen as being the number of household recycling services that the council currently offers. Making the process as convenient as possible for residents is the best way to boost rates, but councillors are currently concerned that they may not have the resources to expand the collection of recyclable materials at the kerbside, according to the Surrey Mirror.
Further pressure is going to be put on the waste collection infrastructure of the county as a result of the fact that the population is expected to grow by almost 90,000 in the next half decade. But ambitious recycling targets must be set if councils across the country are to come close to meeting them.
