Vehicle recycling rises in the UK

The recycling of vehicles which are at the end of their usable life has continued to increase, hitting 88.9 per cent in 2013. This is based on new figures, which the British government has sent to EU regulators, to show the extent of the efforts made to improve the sustainability of the auto industry in the UK.
So-called ELVs (end of life vehicles), need to be recovered in order to either be reused or recycled, with the former option clearly being the most desirable. But when recycling is necessary as a result of a particular car or van being beyond hope of refurbishment or repair, the UK is getting better at extracting the maximum of usable materials from unwanted vehicles.
A report published by the Department for Business, reveals that there has been more than a seven per cent increase in recycling rates for ELVs over the past decade, with the latest regulations in place to ensure that all vehicles are treated with the same attention to detail when sent to be scrapped. This means that cars are handled with identical care as given to lorries, motorbikes and commercial vehicles of all kinds.
There are over 1,500 facilities dotted across the UK which are officially recognised as being able to carry out the right type of vehicle recycling processes, to keep the country in line with EU targets.
Interestingly, the biggest issue facing the industry at the moment is what to do with the fluids which are left over once the solid components of a car have been dismantled for recycling.
There are problems to overcome in all areas of recycling, with even smaller items, like mobile phones, posing some complications for companies looking to salvage internal materials. But new techniques are developed regularly and recycling rates continue to rise.
