WebOS to be revived next year with new smartphones

Electronics firm HP has said that it will bringing the WebOS platform to a number of new devices, including mobile phones, in 2011.
HP made the headlines earlier in 2010, when it acquired ailing smartphone manufacturer Palm. Palm had managed to secure solid reviews for its Pre and Pixi handsets but due to poor sales it was on the brink of collapse when several high profile bids were put in for a takeover, with HP coming away in the driving seat.
It was Palm's WebOS platform, developed in-house, that acted as the main asset in its sale and HP had initially made no commitment to continue launching smartphones based on this software, despite the critical acclaim.
Now HP's VP Eric Cador has officially stated that mobiles and other devices based on WebOS will be arriving at some point next year, with the first launches occurring in the first quarter.
Observers expect that the official unveiling of these devices will occur at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas followed by swift international releases. Mr Cador would not reveal whether or not HP would be using the hardware foundation of the Palm Pre for its mobiles or whether it would be taking an entirely new direction.
The mobile market is incredibly crowded at the moment, with operating systems from Microsoft, Apple, Google, Samsung and Nokia all competing for a position. This means that the consumer has plenty of choice but most experts agree that the number of different platforms will be whittled down as users vote with their wallets, so HP's move is seen as risky.
HP was originally quoted as saying that WebOS would make an appearance on tablet PCs, but now it has made a commitment to the mobile market that should excite and intrigue fans of Palm's previous products.
