Windows Phone 7 gets official launch

Microsoft officially unveiled Windows Phone 7 this week and with it came a number of big name manufacturers announcing their own smartphones based on this brand new platform.
Taiwanese firm HTC and South Korea's Samsung both debuted Windows Phone 7 handsets, with the former showcasing the HD7, while the latter pulled back the curtains on the Omnia 7.
The HTC HD7 follows on from the HD2 and Desire HD by sporting a 4.3 inch screen that, for sheer size, will outclass most of its rivals. The Omnia 7 still has a very respectable four inch screen that uses the Super AMOLED technology last seen in the Galaxy S, but for gaming and movie watching, the HD7 might take pole position.
Neither manufacturer has deviated from the current trend of using 1GHz processors in top of the line smartphones. They have even chosen essentially the same processor from the same chip manufacturer, so at the moment, it is difficult to determine which will be better in terms of performance.
Both smartphones sport a five megapixel camera that can shoot high definition video in 720p, which is nothing that has not been seen in the past. With LED flashes on both, they should be capable in poor lighting, but otherwise they are keeping pace with one another.
At the moment the Samsung Omnia 7 and HTC HD7 are expected to hit the UK market before the end of the month, although launch dates are always open to revision and delays. Pricing has not been confirmed for the HD7, but various UK network providers have already committed to offering the Omnia 7 free on contracts costing less than £40 a month.
Consumers will have to wait for the dust to settle before Windows Phone 7 and the associated smartphones can be given an objective appraisal.
