Windows Phone 7 sales sluggish as smartphone market grows

Although smartphone sales increased by 85 per cent in the first three months of 2011, compared to the same period last year, it looks like Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 is not nabbing a particularly significant piece of the pie.
Just 1.6 million Windows Phone 7 handsets were shipped worldwide in the first quarter, greatly overshadowed by the more than 16 million iPhones which were sold during the same period.
A total of around 428 million mobiles were sold worldwide and so it is clear that Microsoft has some way to go before it can claim to be competitive.
Android is the real victor so far this year, managing to outpace its rivals without breaking a sweat. However, the fractured nature of the Android platform means that it is unfair to compare it with much more locked-down, high end mobile platforms like Windows Phone 7 and Apple's iOS.
Despite the less than stellar news for Microsoft, many analysts at Gartner believe that Nokia's adoption of Windows Phone 7 will see the tide turn in its favour. This is of course a long term hope and one which will not be proved right or wrong for at least a year and a half, given that Nokia does not even have a compatible handset on the market.
Looking at the figures on an even broader scale reveals that more and more consumers are choosing to buy smartphones, regardless of their make or model, when they upgrade. The prevalence of smartphone technology and its eventual dominance of the market seems inevitable.
HTC has said that Windows Phone 7 is still a big part of its ongoing strategy for growth and argued this week in an interview with Reuters that Nokia's adoption of the platform will actually help it shift more handsets, thanks to the rising profile of Microsoft's mobile OS.
