Windows Phone Sales See Strong Growth

Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system has been on the market for almost three years, although during this time it has struggled to establish itself as a true rival to the twin dominant forces of Android and iOS. However, the latest figures from IDC show that the annual growth of Windows Phone sales has been strong enough to make its position as the third biggest mobile OS on the market a concrete proposition.
Sales were up by 77.6 per cent over the last three months, with 8.7 million Windows Phone handsets sold internationally during this period Windows Phone not only managed to outstrip the growth rates of both Android and iOS, but helped to widen the gap between its market share and that of fourth place BlackBerry. Compared to Android's 79.3 per cent share of the market, the 3.7 per cent held by Windows Phone is obviously quite small. But the mobile world can be a volatile one and it might continue to catch up with its better established rivals over time.
Apple will not be pleased to hear that its market share fell to 13.2 per cent, although since the iPhone is a high end device and Android sells at all ends of the market, its decline is not surprising. Apple is getting ready to launch a budget iPhone this autumn to counteract the slide, with the iPhone 5C likely to help it fight off some of the mid-range Android devices that are winning over consumers.
For Windows Phone there is still a long-term war that needs to be waged, but it is looking less and less likely that it will be overtaken by BlackBerry in the near future. All this means that consumers have plenty of choice and a good degree of competition at their disposal to keep prices low.
