YotaPhone gets European launch

An intriguing dual screen mobile called the YotaPhone has gone on sale in several European countries, including France and Germany this week, with a UK release date likely to land early next year, according to TechRadar.
The front of the handset features a 4.3 inch 720p touchscreen display, which is far from an unusual inclusion. But the YotaPhone also has a second screen of similar size built into the rear, using e-ink technology, to give it the same capabilities as dedicated eReaders, like the Kindle range from Amazon.
The idea is that the e-ink screen will allow users to read books, magazines, newspapers and online articles in a format which does not drain the battery, since it does not rely on a backlight.
You can even showcase other apps and interface elements, with the e-ink technology able to keep showing the last image presented to it, even after the battery has been depleted.
The YotaPhone's dual screen setup does mean that it will be relatively expensive, with the Euro price of $499, equating to roughly £420. It does not have the largest or highest resolution primary display on the market, nor the most powerful internal components, but its stand-out selling point could help it to overcome these limitations.
Some believe that smartphones and tablets will help to increase the adopting of e-book publications, which have already risen rapidly, thanks to the success of the Kindle.
Reading text from a standard mobile's LCD or OLED screen is easy, but does result in the battery being drained. With the YotaPhone you can keep your primary screen for gaming and video playback, while using the secondary screen when you want to read an extended portion of text, which could help it to appeal to book lovers and those who get their news on the go.
