ZTE boasts of big Android plans

Chinese smartphone manufacturer, ZTE, has spoken out about its plans for 2013, during an interview with TechRadar, in which representative, Wu Sa, outlined the increased ambitions of the firm.
ZTE has so far produced a number of budget-oriented smartphones, which network providers like Orange have re-branded in order to pass on to consumers.
However, ZTE will apparently be working on its own Android interface, following in the footsteps of HTC's Sense and Samsung's TouchWiz, to make it stand out from the crowd.
Mr Sa explained that the company recognises the struggle that it faces when it comes to branding, because so far consumers have largely remained in the dark about ZTE as a firm, even if they have been using its handsets.
The result is that ZTE will be taking a staggered approach to introducing its own Android overlay, with Mr Sa explaining that its next major handset launch will feature Android 4.0, in an undiluted form.
That handset, known as the Grand X, is likely to give the Samsung Galaxy Nexus a run for its money when it arrives in the next few weeks.
It features a dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, a four inch touchscreen display and the aforementioned Android 4.0 platform, albeit without any overt tinkering from ZTE.
From an aesthetic point of view, it very much looks like ZTE has attempted to echo the look and feel of the Galaxy Nexus, which is no bad thing, given that this will be selling for much less than Samsung's premium product.
But of course the real interest will emerge over the next few months, as ZTE begins to forge its own space in the mobile market, with stronger branding.
While it may not give Apple a run for its money, it could definitely trouble the manufacturers who deal largely in affordable Android handsets.
