ZTE enters world's top five smartphone manufacturers table

Chinese mobile manufacturer, ZTE, may not have been on the radar of mainstream consumers, but it seems that the company has been gaining serious traction, as it was this week able to announce that it had become the fifth most prolific smartphone producer on the planet.
This is a significant piece of information in its own right, but IDC figures also show that ZTE has usurped ailing BlackBerry manufacturer, Research in Motion (RIM), from the top five altogether.
ZTE managed to sell eight million smartphones over the past three months, which is an incredible 300 per cent increase when compared to the same period during 2011.
This allowed it to account for 5.2 per cent of all smartphone sales in the second quarter of 2012, which put it just half a percent behind fourth place HTC and 1.4 per cent behind Nokia, which is looking very precarious in its third position.
Nokia's fall from grace has been rather spectacular, with a 38.9 per cent decline in its share of the smartphone market, year on year, according to IDC.
HTC has also experienced a dip in sales, although it is not quite as well established as Nokia and RIM, which makes its own decline a little less surprising.
ZTE says that it is hoping to become one of the world's top three smartphone manufacturers by 2015, which, at the moment, seems like an easily attainable goal.
This is a company that is attempting to establish its brand in the UK and elsewhere, because so far, it has gone unnoticed as a result of allowing network providers like Orange to rebrand its handsets, thus obscuring the identity of the manufacturer.
The shifting sands of the mobile market favour ZTE, Samsung and Apple at the moment, but many will be wondering which company will be the next to fall victim to failure.
